Q: What is “rock over”?

A: A rock over is the process used to install drywall over existing plaster that has deteriorated. Q: What is a “popcorn ceiling”? If I have problems with this, what are my options?

A: A “popcorn ceiling” is a ceiling that is sprayed using a heavy media to create a uniform but very coarse surface. There are a few reasons why these can deteriorate. Water damage from an exterior leak is the main culprit. Depending on the extent of the damage, the options are as follows: Repair the specific area, however, sometimes the damage can be larger than it appears. And it can be difficult to match the media size and content. Or have the finish removed and a new texture applied. Please keep in mind that some of the media used in the 1960s or 1970s could contain asbestos. Another simple solution for small areas like bathrooms and entryways can be to rock over and refinish. A professional evaluation of this problem is highly recommended.

Q: How do I know if my home contains lead based materials? If so, how can I correct this?

A: The first step is to have the surfaces tested by a qualified contractor. If surfaces test positive for lead, there are very specific EPA guidelines for Abatement or Removal procedures. Making the determination for your specific needs should be performed by a qualified contractor. For more information on this subject, see http://www.epa.gov/lead/

Q: Can the aluminum siding on my house be painted?

A: Many buildings with aluminum siding can be painted if the surface is properly prepared. In recent years, products such as bonding additives have made even quality latex paints a viable solution with reasonable longevity. Bear in mind that low gloss or low sheen finishes to show less inherent flaws, like dents for example. We recommend a professional sprayed finish for best results.

Q: I see people on all these home improvement shows painting pretty much anything!

A: It seems like people will paint just about anything these days using any old paint. These “paint jobs” will look good for a little while, but then deteriorate quickly, thus causing a bigger problem than you had before. Things like doors and cabinets can be painted to have a lasting finish. Material selection, preparation and application method will all be critical for the longest lasting results. So take time to consider this before making your decision. Remember concrete services, such as stone or brick fireplaces are difficult to return to original condition once they are painted.
